July, July

First off, thanks to everyone who came out for our holiday edition of 1st Saturday. We had about 80 folks come out and cleared over 500 lbs of trash off Newport’s streets & beaches. The biggest culprits, once again, were cigarette butts (stay tuned for a special on this from  ZTN’s own Dr. Wdowin). Again, thanks to all of you for fighting the good fight with us and spreading the word.

We met with the City of Newport Beach today and the aftermath of the 4th brought less trash to the streets than ever before. This may be contributed largely to the peninsula lockdown, but we’d like to think that our efforts over the past 9 months (that’s right) are starting to pay off.
Upcoming Events
A couple of our partners from the ZeroTrash Newport Coalition are throwing some free killer events this Saturday, July 10.

Earth Resource Foundation:

ERF and United Studios of Self Defense will be holding the “Earth Goddess” self defense event for women at 3pm. It’s $30. All proceeds go to ERF to help fund programs teaching environmental responsibility where you live, work and play. Visit earthresource.org to sign up.

Surfrider NB:

Check out Transition, A free show featuring hand painted skateboards, original art, live music and an open skate session at Hurley. Starts at 6pm. Head over to surfridernb.org for all the details.

Weekend Wrap

Thanks to everyone who made it out for ZeroTrash Newport’s 6th consecutive 1st Saturday on March 6. We had a great turnout for another drizzly morning with about 75 volunteers showing up at the doorsteps of Avila’s El Ranchito & Sharkeez and picked up a TON of trash.

At Noon we cruised back to the restaurants and got our fill of delicious Mexican food and refreshing beverages for the rest of the afternoon. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday.

We thank El Ranchito, Sharkeez, Surterre, Boston Beer, Heneken, Miller, Below, Villa Pilates, XS Energy & Alta Coffee for helping us put on another killer event. Most importantly, a thank you is order to all the Red Army for donating your time to make a difference in YOUR COMMUNITY!
See you next 1st Saturday on April 3rd..

First Saturday March 6th, 2010 – BIG THINGS HAPPENING!

ZeroTrash Heroes-

Momentum continues to build as we approach spring time in Newport Beach.  For our upcoming First Saturday, March 6th, we are proud to offer a new storefront location in Baja Sharkeez of Newport Beach.  Sharkeez will join Avila’s El Ranchito as our next ZeroTrash Headquarters.  Both establishments will serve as our 10AM meeting point to pick up shirts, pickers, bags, and friends for our monthly community pick up.  Like El Ranchito, Sharkeez will be offering food and drink specials for the ZT army upon completion of our two hours of volunteering.

Who? You, your friends, your family, your neighbors…

When? Saturday, March 6th at 10 o’clock AM

Where? Either Avila’s El Ranchito or Sharkeez  (Newport Beach)

Enjoy some good food, good drinks, and great company while giving back to the community.

I Remember my 1st Saturday

Thanks to everyone who came out for our ZeroTrash Newport Coalition kickoff on Saturday.  Not gonna lie, the hurricane on Friday night had us a little worried.  We would have been hitting the streets, rain or shine, but luckily the trash gods were smiling on us.  The sun came out and we were able to pick up after the storm.  We caffeinated with XS & Alta Coffee and hit the streets & beaches, picking up over 500 lbs of trash from our streets and beaches. Check out our article from yesterday’s Daily Pilot!

A huge thanks to Avila’s El Ranchito for an unlimited supply of tacos, taquitos, quesedillas; all sorts of amazing mexican grub for everyone in a ZTN shirt (courtesy of Surterre).

If you missed this one, make sure to join us on March 6 for the next installment of ZeroTrash Newport’s 1st Saturday!
